Equipment
Jiu Jitsu (Youth)
Here's a list of equipment your child will need, as well as a few optional items that make class comfortable. We've provided some links below to equipment that we trust to be both affordable, and durable. We earn a small commission on those sales, which helps us keep the cost of classes down. Purchase as many sets as you find practical (how often you want to have to wash them...) You probably have many of these items already, or have purchased them for your child's other classes. That stuff will work great, so long as it doesn't have any zippers or sharp/hard materials on them. If you're buying new stuff, there are a plenty of satisfactory products on both ends of the price continuum from the stuff we recommended. We'd be happy to answer any questions you have. Please don't hesitate to reach out!
ALL CLASSES
Slip on Sandals
Required
Students are to participate with bare feet (no socks). To keep our training area clean, students are required to wear footwear when they are off the mats. Easy to slip on/off sandals are best.
Water Bottle
Required
To reduce the amount of time that water breaks can take, each student must bring their own water bottle. It should be large enough to sustain them through 1-2 hours of strenuous activity.
Mouth Guard
Required
Bumps are bound to happen, even with the most courteous training partners. Wearing a mouthguard must be worn when sparring, and is optional for drilling.
Gym Bag & Small Towel
A bag to keep all of their items contained helps to keep the gym tidy during class, but is not required. A towel for wiping sweat may also be nice for them.
GI CLASS
(Wednesday)
A Gi is the set of pants & jacket worn by practitioners of many different types of martial arts. Colored belts are used to signify advancement and achievement. A Jiu Jitsu Gi has a thicker collar than most, and is made from more durable materials, so it can stand up to being in contact with the mats and other practitioners.
GI
Required
You will need a Gi made specifically for Jiu Jitsu. They have a thicker collar, and are generally made from a stiffer material. Our gym has no restrictions on the color of your Gi.
White Belt
Required
All students start with a White Belt. A Jiu Jitsu white belt has a black section at the end of the belt, which is used to add "tapes" which signify a student's progress within that belt.
Most Gi's come with a white belt.
Rash Guard (Shirt)
More expensive Gi's typically include a "rash guard" liner, to protect your skin from the thicker materials the Gi is made from. A compression shirt, either short or long-sleeved, also works very well.
Supportive Undergarments
Many students find supportive undergarments, like compression shorts and sports bras, more comfortable than regular undergarments.
NO GI CLASS
(Friday)
As the name implies, "No Gi" is Jiu Jitsu performed without wearing a Gi. This instruction helps your child to round out their practical understand of the techniques they are learning.
Rash Guard (Shirt)
Required
A tight fitting, compression style shirt, either short or long-sleeved, is used to protect the skin when rolling with others. Pick a color and style that suits your child well.
Shorts
Required
Shorts should be above the knee, somewhat loose fitting and allow for a free range of motion. Please, no zippers or sharp/hard materials.
Rash Guard (Pants)
Some students like to wear tight fitting, compression style pants, to protect the skin on their legs.
Supportive Undergarments
Many students find supportive undergarments, like compression shorts and sports bras, more comfortable than regular under garments.
